End-of-Trip Reflections:

  1. How is the Taiwanese culture shaped? What are the historical events that shaped its culture?

  • The culture of Taiwan is a mix of Confucian Han Chinese, Taiwanese aboriginal, and Japanese Cultures. Taiwan was also once ruled by the Japanese Empire, hence there are many Japanese customs used by the Taiwanese people.
  • Taiwan also uses Traditional Chinese, which is different from Mainland China which uses Simplified Chinese. This is because the People's Republic of China implemented the simplification process of Chinese after the Republic of China was formed, hence there are differences between the spelling of Chinese Characters.

  1. How does science and technology impact the Taiwanese lifestyle?

  • Science and Technology have impacted Taiwan in both lifestyle as well as the economy
  • Lifestyle: During the early years after the formation of the Republic of China, Taiwan was still primitive and living a traditional lifestyle. Only after reforms in Taiwan, the government sponsored technological development. An example of technology impacting Taiwanese lifestyle is the development of the Central Weather Bureau. It is able to show the current weather forecast predict weather pattern changes in order to warn the citizens of any upcoming typhoons or other natural disasters. This will greatly reduce casualties if there is a natural disaster as many people would be already warned and prepared beforehand.
  • Economy: The rapid technological developments brought with it multiple big international technological companies based in Taiwan. Such companies are as follows: Asus, Acer, Foxconn, etc. These companies contributed massively to the development of the economy of Taiwan

  1. What is the importance of science education in relation to the technological/economical progress of a country? Explain.

  • Science education is important as a country as a country needs to be technologically advanced in order to compete in a ever globalising world. Students need to receive science education in order to make correct decisions and think for themselves, instead of following whoever has the biggest voice. For example, many people believe that nuclear power is harmful and extremely dangerous, however nuclear power is actually very safe due to modern technology and it does not produce any greenhouse gasses, unlike coal or oil power stations. Because of this, many citizens of countries oppose the construction of nuclear power plants, impeding the technological development of the country.
